New Rivian R2 vs BMW iX3! | 4K
- Top Gear compares the Rivian R2 (US) vs. the BMW iX3 (Europe) – two electric family SUVs with different philosophies.
- The BMW iX3 is the first model of BMW's new “Neue Klasse” and aims to redefine the ultimate driving machine, while te Rivian R2 is a fresh, minimalistic challenger.
- The R2 won't be available in Europe until 2028; its starting price is significantly lower (R2 from ~$45,000, BMX from ~$60,000).
- BMW iX3: Futuristic but carries retro design elements (kidney grille, pop-out handles). Looks a bit “stumpy” and heavy. The M Sport wheels are odd.
- Rian R2: Clean, uncluttered lines, reminiscent of a chopped Land Rover Defender. Yellow brake calipers, full-width LED bar, robust tow hooks. Frunk (front trunk) opens externally – very practical.
- Both have pop-out handles, but the Rivian's work more reliably.
- Rivian feature: The rear window opens separately – a feature BMW had on Tourings but removed. Perfect for dogs.
- BMW iX3: Radical move to touchscreen-only – no iDrive dial. Huge touchscreen, oddly shaped steering wheel, touch-sensitive buttons (criticized like VW). Many hard plastics, fake metal, hard-to-reach menus. Apple CarPlay shows large black bezels. Positives: Head-up display projects info onto windshield, permanent temperature bar.
- Rivian R2: Modern but well-thought-out. Adaptive scroll wheel (temp/volume) reduces touchscreen use. High-quality materials: light leather, fabric on doors/dashboard, open-pore driftwood. Apple-like interface, physical buttons for windows. Lots of storage: dual gloveboxs, sliding tray, pop-out cupholders. All five windows can be lowered simultaneously.
- Rivian practical details: Steering wheel and mirrors adjusted via wheel controls (not in touchscreen). No Apple CarPlay, but own system with clever features (e.g., send controls to passenger).
- BMW iX3: Best driving elecric SUV in its class (until Porsche Macan EV). Precise steering, excellent handling despite 2.5 tons. Very efficient: 4.0 mi/kWh (~6.4 km/kwh) – almost 20% more than the Rivian. EPA range significantly higher. 469 hp – sporty but not overkill.
- Rivan R2: 656 hp – honestly too much. Feels more like a comfortable truck: soft suspension, tall tires, relaxed driving (Volvo-like). Driving modes (Soft Sand, Rally, etc.) show little difference. Regen always strong – no true coasting. EPA range 330 miles (~531 km) – much less than BMW.
- Driving verdict: BMW rewards sporty drivers, Rivian prioritizes calm and comfort. The R2 is lighter (2,250 kg vs. ~2,500 kg), but BMW uses its power better.
- Rivian R2 (tested): $62,000 – $10,000 cheaper than a comparable BMW iX3 ($72,000).
- BMW has better range and sportier handling – but also more annoying controls.
- Host's personal verdict: If money no object and range/dynamics matter → BMW iX3. If design, ambience, and practicality are key → Rivan R2. He'd spend his money on the Rivian.
- Rivan R2 is a surprisingly complete car that genuinely challenges the established BMW.
- BMW iX3 remains excellent, but its radical touchscreen interface and material quality may push buyers to the Rivian.
- Exciting: This is Rivian's “second album” after the successful R1T – great potential as a volume model.
