KILLER IN A COLORFUL DRESS? Canada's Greatest Mystery ... The Case of Lindsay Buziak
On February 2, 2008, 24-year-old real estate agent Lindsay Buziak was brutally murdered in an empty house in Victoria, Canada. The case remains one of Canada's most puzzling cold cases.
Background
- Lindsay Buziak (born November 2, 1983) grew up in British Columbia, was fashion-conscious, ambitious, and worked as a realtor for REMAX Chemainus.
- She lived with her boyfriend Jason Silo, a former hockey player well-connected in real estate.
- Lindsay was cautious about people and avoided drug and crime circles.
The Mysterious Call
- On February 1, 2008, Lindsay receives a call on her private phone from a woman with a fake Spanish accent.
- The woman claims she and her husband are moving to Victoria and urgently need a house – budget up to $1 million CAD.
- She says she got Lindsay's number from a former client in Vancouver (whom Lindsay doesn't recall).
- A viewing is scheduled for the next day at 5:30 PM at a house on De Sousa Place.
The Crime
- February 2, 2008: Lindsay meets Jason for lunch, seems nervous. He offers to accompany her; she declines, but he agrees to come later.
- At 5:30 PM, witnesses see Lindsay meeting a man and a woman outside the house. The woman wears a striking colorful dress (black-red-white pattern). They shake hands.
- Shortly after entering (5:38 PM), Jason texts her – she never reads it.
- At 5:41 PM, a pocket dial is made from Lindsay's phone, likely from a fall or struggle – time of attack.
- Jason and his friend Cohen Oldman arrive at 5:45 PM, see movement behind the door. No one answers; door is locked.
- Cohen enters through the patio door, finds Lindsay upstairs in the master bedroom – covered in blood, stabbed multiple times. CPR fails.
Forensic Findings
- Cause of death: Massive blood loss from multiple stab wounds (knife or sharp blade). No defensive wounds – surprise attack from behind.
- Scene: Few usable traces – no foreign DNA, hairs, fibers, or weapon. Only bloody footprints and fingerprints from Jason and Cohen.
Investigation and Theories
- 700+ tips, 2000+ persons checked, collaboration with RCMP and FBI.
- The perpetrator couple: Composite sketch of the woman and dress image released. Her phone number led to a prepaid burner phone (bought 3 months prior, never used again).
- Jason Silo was briefly a suspect but cleared by alibi, polygraph, and cooperation.
- Three main theories:
- Contract killing: Planned, professional, but the fake accent, colorful dress, and brutal stabbing don't fit a pro.
- Personal motive: Relationship issues? But Jason is cleared.
- Drug connection: Lindsay met friends in Calgary 2 months prior; later 80 kg of cocaine were found. Police confirm she was not the informant. Unlikely.
Unanswered Questions
- Who are the man and woman? Why the elaborate setup (fake appointment, burner phone, flashy dress)?
- What was the motive? Personal revenge? Contract? Random?
- 18 years later, the case remains unsolved. Lindsay's family and friends live with uncertainty.
