I Tested Every New Hario Dripper. Here's What I Learned.
Summary: Testing Every New Hario Dripper
This video reviews three new Hario drippers: Alpha, Ran (Wren), and Neo – all compared to the classic V60.
Hario Alpha- Design: Inverted rib pattern – 12 flutes at the top, 24 near the bottom (doubling up) to promote bypass and prevent stalling.
- Taste: High clarity, floral notes, structured acidity, and lively effervescence. The author's favorite.
- Performance: Faster drawdown than a V60 but slightly slower than the Neo.
- Design: 12 continuous flutes with concave angles, inspired by Eastern philosophy. Developed with Yasuo Suzuki (Origami dripper).
- Taste: Emphasizes sweetness and balance, similar to flat-bottom brewers. Less pronounced acidity, more ripe fruit notes.
- Performance: Very even extraction, ideal for those who prefer a sweeter, rounder cup.
- Design: 72 fine ribs converging into 9 near the outlet – enabling the fastest drawdown of all.
- Taste: Rounder but 'more boring' – lower extraction efficiency due to high bypass. Best for darker roasts or very fine grinds.
- Performance: Excellent for users with grinders producing many fines, or for use with a Switch (immersion method).
- Alpha is the author's go-to (more clarity and florals).
- Ran suits sweetness lovers.
- Neo is the least impressive flavor-wise but most versatile – especially for dark roasts, fine grinds, or Switch brewing.
- All three are more consistent and faster than a V60, but not revolutionary. The author recommends the Alpha as a new standard dripper.
Note: The Ran and Neo are only available in Tritan plastic; the Alpha also comes in ceramic.
