How Crypto Wallets ACTUALLY Work
- A crypto wallet does not store coins – they remain on the blockchain.
- It's more like a keychain: it holds the private keys that prove ownership of specific addresses.
- If you lose the keys, your coins are locked forever – e.g., James Howells lost 8,000 BTC (now ~$670 million) on a landfill.
- From a Private Key (a random large number) a Public Key is derived via elliptic curve math.
- The Public Key is hashed to create an address – the string you share to receive payments.
- The process is one-way: Private Key → Public Key → Address, but not reversible.
- To send coins, you sign the transaction with your Private Key. The network verifies the signature using your Public Key – your Private Key never leaves your device.
- The seed phrase (12 or 24 words from a list of 2048) can restore all your private keys on any compatible wallet.
- Important: Anyone with your seed phrase has full access – no device or password needed.
- Never store it digitally (screenshot, cloud, notes) – write it down on paper or stamp it into metal.
| Type | Pros | Risks |
|---|---|---|
| Hot Wallet (app/browser extension) | Free, fast, great for daily use & DeFi | Online attacks, phishing, malware |
| Cold Wallet (hardware device) | Highest security – keys stay offline | Cost (60–80 $), less convenient, “blind signing” for complex smart contracts |
- Rule of thumb: Hot wallet for spending, cold wallet for long-term holding.
- Exchange wallets are not real wallets: “Not your keys, not your crypto” (FTX lesson).
- Only official sources – App Store or manually typed URL; never click links from emails/social media.
- Secure your seed phrase – never digital, never enter it on any website.
- Always send a test transaction before moving larger amounts.
- Hot wallet for daily use, cold wallet for savings.
- Fake support: Someone asks for your seed phrase – real support never does.
- Phishing website: You connect your wallet to a lookalike site and unknowingly sign a malicious transaction.
- Lost backup: Device lost, seed phrase never written down – coins frozen forever.
Your crypto security depends on your habits, not on breaking cryptography. No one ever needs your seed phrase – only you. Read what you sign, keep keys offline. Setting up a wallet takes minutes; the rest is discipline and common sense.
