34 Tricks for More Net Pay from Your Employer! (Without a Raise)

💡 The Core Idea: Structuring Your Salary Smarter

A traditional 6% raise on a €50,000 salary nets you only about €133 extra per month. You can keep much more by converting parts of that raise into tax-free or tax-reduced benefits. This video covers over 30 strategies.

The key concept is the taxable benefit in kind: non-cash perks from your employer are usually taxable. However, there are four categories of exemptions:

  • Completely tax-free (for both employee and employer)
  • Exemption limit (Freigrenze): Tax-free up to a specific amount; if exceeded, the entire benefit becomes taxable.
  • Tax-free allowance (Freibetrag): Tax-free up to a specific amount; only the excess is taxable.
  • Lump-sum taxation by employer: Tax-free for you; the employer pays a flat 25% tax (no social contributions).
🎁 Non-Cash Benefits & Perks (Up to €50/month)
  • €50 monthly benefit (exemption limit!): Must be provided in addition to your salary and can't be cashed out. Common uses:
    • Gym membership
    • Fuel vouchers
    • Grocery vouchers
    • Prepaid benefit cards (e.g., Spendit, Givey) – flexible spending at partner stores.
  • Occasional gifts (exemption limit €60): For birthdays, weddings, job anniversaries.
  • Company events (allowance €110/person/event, max 2 events/year): For Christmas parties, team outings. Costs over €110 can be lump-sum taxed by the employer.
🍽️ Meals & Refreshments
  • Meal subsidies: If the employer provides a canteen or meal vouchers, you must pay a co-payment (€4.57 for lunch, €2.37 for breakfast). The employer can add up to €3.10 tax-free (total voucher value €7.67).
  • Coffee, fruit, snacks: Unlimited tax-free, as long as consumed at the office.
💻 Home Office & Tech
  • Phone & internet: Your employer can reimburse actual costs or a flat rate of €50/month (tax-free for you; employer pays 25% lump-sum tax).
  • Company phone & laptop: Private use is tax-free. If you get to keep the device after leaving, its residual value becomes a taxable benefit.
  • Home office equipment: Employer can subsidize desks, chairs, etc. without limit (equipment remains company property).
📚 Education & Health
  • Training costs: Completely tax-free if job-related.
  • Company health promotion (allowance €600/year): Certified courses (yoga, back training, nutrition) – paid by employer, no social contributions.
  • In-house sports facilities: Use is always tax-free.
🚗 Mobility
  • Job ticket / Deutschlandticket: Employer provides it tax-free. Also possible as a salary conversion (employer pays 25% flat tax). Note: Only for local public transit (no ICE). The amount is deducted from your commuter allowance.
  • Company bicycle/E-bike: Employer provides it tax-free (as extra benefit or salary conversion). Employer pays 25% flat tax.
  • Commuting subsidy (car): Up to €0.38/km for the one-way commute (same as commuter allowance rules). Employer pays 15% flat tax. This amount cannot also be claimed in your tax return.
  • Company car (1% rule): If you can also use it privately, 1% of the gross list price is taxed monthly. Only 0.5% for hybrids, 0.25% for fully electric cars.
  • Charging your EV: Tax-free if you charge on company premises.
  • Parking: A company parking spot is tax-free. External parking paid by employer is more complex.
  • Business trips: Your employer can pay a tax-free flat rate of €14 (8-24h) or €28 (full day).
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family & Housing
  • Daycare subsidy: Unlimited, but must be specifically for daycare costs.
  • Emergency childcare: Up to €600/year tax-free from employer.
  • Vacation bonus (Erholungsbeihilfe): Employer pays €156 for you, €104 for partner, €52 per child (tax-free for you, employer pays flat tax).
  • Relocation costs: Employer can reimburse actual costs or a flat rate of €964 if the move is job-related (or saves at least 1 hour commute time).
  • Discounted rent: Employer can provide a subsidized apartment. As long as the rent is at least 2/3 of the local market rate (max €25/sqm), it's not a taxable benefit.
💰 Equity & Pensions
  • Employee discount (allowance €1,080/year): Discounted or free services from your employer.
  • Equity participation (allowance €2,000/year): Tax-free transfer of company shares (e.g., stock).
  • Low-interest loan: Up to €2,600 tax-free; for larger amounts, the interest advantage counts toward the €50 monthly benefit limit.
  • Company pension (bAV): Saves tax and social contributions now, but has drawbacks: pensions are fully taxed and subject to social contributions later, and it's inflexible when changing jobs.
⚠️ Important Notes
  • Lower social contributions now → lower benefits later (pension, unemployment, parental allowance). The effect is usually small but should be considered.
  • Don't neglect your salary history: A higher gross salary forms the basis for future negotiations.

Note: Units were already metric (Euros, kilometers), so no conversion was necessary.
