Perhaps the best grinder we've ever tested – with one annoyance
This 100th tested grinder left the testers Benjamin and Michel deeply impressed. The P80 delivers an incredibly narrow particle distribution (peak around 100 µm), producing sensational clarity, elegance, and a surprisingly heavy body – especially with light roasts. Medium to dark roasts also perform excellently, with sweet, nutty notes and a well‑structured cup.
Technical highlights
- 80 mm burrs (here: SSP 800 Burrs) provide high speed (~9 s for 18 g at 1100 rpm)
- Quiet (82.9 dB) and minimal retention (max. 0.2 g – temporary + permanent)
- Variable speed (300–1700 rpm) via external dial
- Ioniser reduces static; ADT/water spray still recommended
- Easy cleaning via removable dosing ring
The major criticism: grind adjustment
The scale is far too coarse and the markings are unevenly spaced. Between two vertical lines lie 8–10 s of brew time – making precise adjustments nearly impossible. Testers often have to take photos and work between the lines. “This massively reduces the incredible precision of this grinder.”
Espresso potential & user notes
- Excellent for light, complex coffees – with some practice also for dark roasts
- Requires good extraction understanding and clean puck preparation → not a beginner grinder
- The built‑in knocker is functional; the dosing cup is very well made
- Particularly recommended with machines that offer flow or pressure profiling
Bottom line
The Option O Lagoon P80 is among the best grinders ever tested. Its particle distribution and resulting flavour are exceptional. However, the poor grind adjustment noticeably mars the overall experience. Those willing to invest time in dialling in will be rewarded with extraordinarily good espressos.
