New Jaguar Type 01: Can It Save Jaguar? | 4K
Jaguar unveils the Type 01 (officially “Type Zero 1”) as its first fully electric production model, marking a radical brand reboot. This is the only model of the new Jaguar – if it fails, the brand dies.
Design & Exterior
- The front is flat and clean: the radar is hidden behind the Jaguar script, no ugly sensors protrude.
- The four-stripe LED signature becomes a trademark – reminiscent of BMW’s “Angel Eyes”.
- Instead of a grille, there’s a ribbed, barcode-like design with motorized shutters that open only when needed, adding 27 miles (43.5 km) of range.
- Standard 23-inch wheels (58.4 cm), optional 21-inch (53.3 cm) for snow chains. Wheels make up over half the car’s height (1.4 m).
- No camera mirrors – Jaguar sticks to traditional mirrors, as cameras are useless in the dark and bad weather.
- The rear has no window; instead a large shark-fin antenna and a reversing camera feeding a display inside.
- Charge ports on both sides – no matter how you park at a charger.
Technical Data & Performance
- Three electric motors (one front, two rear) delivering 1,030 hp and 1,365 Nm.
- 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, top speed 150 mph (241 km/h) (artificially limited to prevent nausea).
- 118 kWh battery, DC fast charging at up to 350 kW → 10–80% in just over 20 minutes.
- Range (highway) approx. 320 miles (515 km) – realistic estimate.
- Rear-wheel steering (up to 6°) and near 50/50 weight distribution for agile handling.
- Stiffest and most aerodynamic Jaguar ever; 360 patents.
Interior & Comfort
- Four doors, but a deliberately snug cabin – designed as a 2+2 seater. Jaguar says: if you want space, buy another car.
- Massive center console from front to back, high beltline – typical Jaguar, giving a cocooning feel.
- No leather in base version; fabric and carpet extending over sills and pillars create a 1970s charm.
- Digital cockpit: 24-inch main display for driver info & media, a tilted 7-inch touchscreen for climate, seat heating etc.
- No speakers in doors: sound comes from a soundbar spanning the entire dashboard.
- Rearview mirror as camera image – takes getting used to.
- Rear seats: limited headroom and legroom, but separate touchscreen for climate & seat functions, pop-up vents and rotating storage compartments.
- Trunk: 450 liters, slopes rearward (prevents luggage from sliding), active rear spoiler with three stages (up to 75 kg downforce).
Price & Market Positioning
- Starting price around £120,000 (€136,000), average transaction price significantly higher with options.
- Target audience: buyers who would otherwise choose Bentley, Porsche, or Mercedes S-Class Coupé.
- Jaguar needs to sell about 10,000 units worldwide per year.
Verdict: A Bold Reboot with Risks
- Design divides opinion: more 9s and 10s than any Jaguar ever, but also more 1s and 2s.
- No hybrid, no range extender – fully electric, a risky move given current luxury car trends.
- Launching as a four-door sedan, not an SUV – equally bold, but cooler.
- External risks: tariffs (Trump), declining demand for European luxury cars in China, UK’s proposed EV mileage tax.
- Yet: “The biggest gamble the automotive industry has ever seen” – if it succeeds, it will become legendary.
“This car sets the tone for the completely new Jaguar company. More exclusive, more individual, more luxurious, and fully electric.”
