Super-Wagon Showdown: Audi RS5 Avant vs. BMW M3 Touring

A comparison between the new Audi RS5 Avant (plug-in hybrid V6, ~100 hp more, but 445 kg heavier) and the BMW M3 CS Touring (pure petrol inline-six, 543 hp, £126,000).

Design & Exterior

  • Audi RS5: Looks massive and menacing. Wider body (+90 mm), bespoke rear doors. A real head-turner in the right color. Point for Audi.
  • BMW M3: Attractive from three sides, but the front end (the large kidney grille) is described as ugly. The rear with its wide arches and diffuser is excellent.

Practicality & Cargo Space

  • BMW M3: Much more practical. 500 liters of trunk space, handy split tailgate, clever storage solutions, flat-folding rear seats (1,510 liters).
  • Audi RS5: Weakness. Only 361 liters of trunk space. The plug-in hybrid battery (25.9 kWh) sits under the boot floor, eating into space and creating a large lip when seats are folded. No underfloor storage. Point for BMW.

Interior & Daily Livability

  • Audi RS5: More modern, but dominated by touchscreens and glossy black plastic. Better-shaped steering wheel and more comfortable seats. Wins for a marginally more sensible interior layout.
  • BMW M3: Older design, but with physical buttons (e.g., climate), the iDrive controller. But a steering wheel that is too thick and messy digital dials. Slight point for Audi.

Sound

  • BMW M3: Sounds raw, rough, and angry. Much more aggressive and emotional.
  • Audi RS5: Emits a V6 warble, but is much more subdued. Clear loss to the BMW.

Driving Dynamics

  • BMW M3 CS: Outstanding. Superb steering precision, perfect brakes, immense control. Feels like a sports coupe. Extremely engaging and predictable.
  • Audi RS5: Brutal and aggressive, but less cohesive. The hybrid powertrain can feel jerky, and regenerative braking interferes with the driving flow. More comfortable ride, but the overall package is less polished.
Verdict

The BMW M3 CS Touring wins this comparison.

It is more exciting to drive, more practical, and ultimately more versatile. The RS5 is the better-looking car and a more comfortable daily driver, but it cannot match the BMW's driving fun or practicality.

Note: The M3 CS is significantly more expensive (£126k) than a standard M3 Touring. The RS5 starts at £92k.
