New vs Peak: Audi RS5 Avant vs V8 RS4 Avant! | 4K
A head-to-head comparison between the all-new Audi RS5 Avant (2026) and its great-grandfather, the Audi RS4 Avant B7 (2005). Which fast estate wins in design, engine, interior, running costs, and driving thrills?
Design – Two Decades of Style- Both cars look fabulous as estate cars.
- The B7 RS4 was criticized in 2005 for being too flashy; today it seems restrained and dignified.
- The RS5 features a 90mm wider track (vs. 44mm), massive cooling intakes, and LED overkill (eight different DRL signatures).
- Downsides: too much black plastic, missing silver door mirrors (prone to theft on the RS4 – cost around £700).
- RS4 (old): 4.2L naturally aspirated V8, 414 hp, revs to 8,250 rpm. Legendary sound, but suffers from carbon buildup if not driven hard. Needs regular oil top-ups and spirited driving.
- RS5 (new): 2.9L twin-turbo V6 with hybrid assist, over 630 hp. Complex tech (variable turbos, Miller cycle), but more efficient.
- Engine placement: Both have the engine ahead of the front axle – an Audi quirk that compromises handling.
- RS4: Audi's golden age. High-quality materials, perfect ergonomics, Lamborghini steering wheel, Recaro seats. Quirks: no cupholders, CD changer, ashtray.
- RS5: Packed with features (streaming, massage seats, B&O sound), but touchscreen overload, cheap piano black plastic, finicky center armrest. „Some unAudi-ness“ compared to the old car's perfection.
- Prices: New RS5 from ~£91,000 (or ~£1,200/month). Old RS4 from £12,000, good examples £20,000–£40,000.
- Fuel economy: RS4: 17–22 mpg (16.6–12.8 L/100km). RS5: 22 mpg when uncharged, up to 50 miles (80 km) electric range.
- Boot space: The old RS4 offers 80 liters more (seats down: 1,080 vs. 1,030 L) and no hybrid battery intrusion.
- Weight: RS5 is 720 kg heavier – questionable progress.
- RS4: Flows down the road, light, precise gearbox (like Porsche GT), compliant ride. „Star quality“. Weaknesses: older suspension, some chassis flex.
- RS5: „Industrial quantities of grip“, feels like a Nissan GT-R. Massive speed, but tiring – too many systems working for and against each other. Impressive, but less engaging.
The RS5 is technically superior – faster, more efficient, safer. The RS4 is more characterful, lighter, and affordable. Both are brilliant, but the old V8 wagon steals the heart.
