Mario Model One: Update and Review of the Espresso Machine

Introduction

The video provides an update on the Mario Model One espresso machine, which already impressed in its first test. Now, improvements have been made and the test protocol has been tightened.

Volumetrics
  • Without scale: The calculated volumetrics were optimized. In a test with constant resistance, the average was 45.8 g (target 45 g). In real espresso shots (25 seconds, 45 g), values ranged from 44.6 to 45.4 g. With changed pressure profiles, accuracy slightly decreased (43.5 g). With extremely coarse grind (15–17 s) about 44 g, with extremely fine grind about 48.5 g. This earned 7 out of 10 points.
  • With scale: In the first version of the scale test, there was a standard deviation of 1.5 g. After an update, the scale learns from previous brews and corrects. The average deviation improved from 1.13 g to 0.37 g. Now it reaches 9 out of 10 points (the last point is missing because the scale is not integrated – it must be placed separately).
Other Improvements
  • Last shot function: Now available.
  • Water filter: A plug-in filter in the water tank is recommended to protect the machine. This led to a deduction.
  • Maro Home platform: A community with a brew database, profile search, recipes, and statistics. Recipes can be shared and brews analyzed.
  • Manual step control: During brewing, you can manually jump to the next step.
Price and Context

The machine costs €5000. This is very expensive, but the brew performance, temperature stability, and usability are excellent. Compared to other high-end machines (e.g., La Marzocco Linea), the price is similar. The only counterarguments could be the design or lack of brand legacy.

Conclusion

The Mario Model One remains one of the best espresso machines on the market. Volumetrics have been significantly improved, and the platform offers many additional features. If you are willing to invest €5000, you get a top-tier product.
