Did Fellow Change Home Espresso? Or, Just Another Prosumer Machine? ES1 Full Review
Lance Hedrick tests the new Fellow ES1 espresso machine to see if it lives up to the hype. Fellow, known for aesthetics & function (e.g., EKG kettle, Ode grinder), aims to create a versatile ecosystem for coffee lovers.
Design & Build
- Materials: Main body is plastic with powder coating (looks metallic), lots of plastic (housing, water tank, drip tray) – feels premium but not all-metal.
- Controls: Circular screen (controversial readability), three 'piano keys', knob (similar to Fellow kettle).
- Steam wand: Insulated, temperature probe for auto shut-off, fully articulated.
- Portafilter: Standard E61-compatible, but Lance criticizes the large lip – looks bulky with normal baskets.
Key Innovation: 'Boosted Boiler'
- Core tech: Combines a boiler (as heat capacitor), flow-through heater & actively heated group head – achieves 2-minute heat-up vs. 30+ minutes for E61.
- Temperature stability: Extremely precise (±0.3°C) across multiple shots – outperforms many competitors at this price.
- Steam & hot water: Separate from boiler – steam in 3–5 seconds, hot water varies with volume.
Pressure Profiling & App
- Pressure profiles: Up to 10 stages (e.g., lever-style, Slayer-style). Key limitation: time-based, not flow-based – requires dialing in for each bean.
- App control: Intuitive, with community profiles (e.g., 'Blooming Espresso') & Fellow Drops. Limitations: Auto-volumetrics only up to 1:5 ratio (Lance wants 1:10 or finer steps).
- Future potential: Flow profiling not enabled due to complexity – Lance hopes for updates.
Coffee Quality & Workflow
- In testing: Light & dark roasts, 'Low Contact' (fast shot) & 'Soup' (long shot). Lance & colleague Ugo rate it excellent (8.7–9.3/10).
- Milk foam: Wand enables near-hands-free steaming with precise temp control – good for latte art, but probe needs maintenance.
- Longevity: Fellow certifies 5 years through stress tests, but service is complex (many screws, tight internals). Extended warranty (€149) recommended.
Verdict: Price vs. Performance
- Price: $1,500. Competitors: Breville Dual Boiler, Lelit Elizabeth – offer less profile flexibility & longer heat-up.
- Strengths: Temp stability, heat-up time, pressure profiles, steam power, app integration, compact design.
- Weaknesses: Material mix (lots of plastic), service complexity, rough auto-volumetrics, no flow profiling (yet).
- Target audience: Best for enthusiastic beginners who love milk drinks & experimentation – not for minimalists or purists.
Lance's final take: "The ES1 is an innovative machine with killer features – but for pure milk drinks, a cheaper Bambino suffices. It shines with medium to light roasts & milk workflows. If you want long-lasting all-metal build, save for a Decent or wait for a potential Fellow metal version."
