The Body's Intrinsic Repair System- The body possesses a repair system (stem cells) that functions analogously to the immune system.
- In response to injury (cut, fracture), stem cells are released from the bone marrow, circulate in the blood, and migrate specifically to damaged tissue to initiate repair.
- Over time, red (stem cell-producing) bone marrow converts to yellow (fatty) marrow ( "bone marrow conversion" ).
- By age 15, about 50% of red marrow is lost.
- By age 30–35, about 75% is lost.
- This leads to fewer and less functional stem cells, drastically reducing regenerative capacity and is seen as a primary cause of aging and disease.
- Certain plant extracts (e.g., AFA blue-green algae, Panax notoginseng, sea buckthorn) can stimulate the release of stem cells from the bone marrow – mimicking an injury response without causing harm.
- They work via different mechanisms:
- Blocking the CXCR4 receptor that anchors stem cells in the marrow.
- Increasing "stem cell factor" in the blood.
- Reversing the SDF-1 gradient, causing stem cells to be flushed into the bloodstream.
- Regular intake (e.g., 3× daily) can double the number of circulating stem cells.
- A study of 10 patients with chronic heart failure (ejection fraction <45%) showed:
- After 6 months of daily stem cell mobilization (with no medication changes), all patients achieved normal heart function (ejection fraction ≥50%).
- Expanded studies (40 patients) compare: mobilization vs. stem cell injection vs. combination.
- The combination showed almost double the benefits compared to either treatment alone.
- Injected stem cells (e.g., from umbilical cord):
- Mostly trapped in the lungs, do not survive long, and work mainly by releasing growth factors and exosomes ("time-release").
- Body's own stem cells (via mobilization):
- Released into arterial blood, reach all tissues, and are not attacked by the immune system.
- They can actually engraft and integrate into tissue – enabling true repair.
- The effectiveness of injection heavily depends on the person's own stem cell reserve.
- Reduce systemic inflammation: Chronic inflammation creates "background noise" that confuses stem cells. Reducing it improves their ability to find the right target.
- Improve microcirculation: Substances like nattokinase and nitric oxide boosters enhance blood flow and capillary flexibility, helping stem cells reach damaged tissue.
- Autophagy & Fasting: Multi-day fasts rejuvenate stem cells. Numbers increase during the fast, but activity is suppressed; after refeeding, stem cells become more active and "younger".
- Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF): Can locally attract stem cells, boost their migration, and promote differentiation into tissue like cartilage or tendons.
- Red Light Therapy: Improves mitochondrial function, increases blood flow, and may directly stimulate stem cells.
- The greatest opportunity for longevity, according to Drapeau, lies in reconverting yellow marrow back to red marrow to regenerate the stem cell reserve.
- This could significantly push back the age limit of regeneration.
